Tips on Tuesday

Peeling hard boiled eggs

I love hard boiled & deviled eggs but always end up with a mess when the membrane or shells stick to the egg.  I’ve tried vinegar, salt, plunging them in ice water etc. All the tips and tricks found on line and still end up with pitted eggs or big chunks missing.

It’s not so bad if your tossing them in a salad but if your taking deviled eggs to a get together you want them to look nice.

Some where on line I read to add baking soda.  As you add water to the pan, toss in some baking soda (I used a few tablespoons)  and then add your eggs. When they are done plunge in cold water and they peel sooooo easy.

I found 2 drawbacks to this method.

The first is if your eggs crack in the water they may have the soda taste. The second is there are no ugly eggs to snack on!

I wish I could remember which website to credit for this tip as it worked perfect for me. If it was you, please let me know so I can give proper credit!

Another good tip I picked up from Paula is to using your crockpot to cook down your tomato’s while making sauce.   Sure saved time needing to babysit a pot on the stove and cooked down wonderfully!

Thanks Paula & I love your blog

  1. Well, that would be a handy tip. I'm going to try that next time I go to boil eggs. I thought I had the easiest way to do it (gave the job to hubby!!), but sometimes even HE lets loose with a naughty word while working on a particularly stubborn shell.......

  2. Sue, I couldn't believe how easy it was. I laughed at my self because I was so excited. At a cookout this weekend I told a couple of family members and they looked at me like I was nuts. ...well, they think the garden is nuts to HAHAHA,

  3. Oo I'll have to give that a go some time. Thanks for the tip! My husband tends to use a small spoon to peel eggs. I don't know if it's that or his greater patience but he manages to peel much neater eggs than I do lol

  4. I found that tip a couple months back from pinterest and it does work and like you said if it cracks you can taste it lol. I keep forgetting to add it sometimes though! I boil at least 1dz eggs a week for kids lunches, my breakfast etc. I just did 1dz this morning actually and there are only 5 left (I only had ONE!). lol

  5. Something else I've found that makes eggs easy to peel is to NOT use your freshest eggs! "Older" ones peel much, much easier. Using eggs that are a week or two old is possible only when your hens are laying well enough that you get a bit of a back up, of course, but it does make a difference in how they peel.

  6. Aww, thanks for the shout out Katie! I am glad to see you are posting tips as well...tips are great..all of them. We can all use a hand getting jobs done faster and easier! Great tip on the eggs....I love, love, love eggs. They are my favorite food. I always have at least a dozen hard boiled in the fridge at any given time. Thanks for the tips!
